Know the Red Flags: Exploring the Early Symptoms of Brain Tumours

Early detection is a phrase we have all come across in blogs, news articles and awareness videos. But more often than not, we flip through or scroll past such content, unaware of its significance. However, when it comes to diseases like cancer and tumours, early detection offers a much needed lifeline. Early diagnosis and preventive intervention help ensure successful treatment and can slow down or prevent cancer from progressing further.

In order to catch something early, it is important to be on the lookout for red signs. This blog takes you through the early symptoms of brain tumours, distinguishes between benign and cancerous tumours and offers guidance on what to do if you suspect something is astray.

Are All Brain Tumours Cancerous?

A brain tumour is an abnormal growth of cells in the brain or nearby tissues. The two broad types of brain tumours are benign and malignant tumours.

Benign Tumours: These tumours are non-cancerous in nature, grow slowly and are not as dangerous.

Malignant Tumours: These are cancerous in nature and can spread to other parts of the brain or body.

Benign tumours can still cause problems based on their size and due to the location in such a crucial part of the body. Thus, they too require proper medical evaluation and potential treatment.

Exploring the Early Signs of Brain Tumours

With more than 120 types of brain tumours, it is virtually impossible to list out all the symptoms. Factor such as location, size and type of tumour will also determine the symptoms that will show up. However, here are some of the common ones:

  • Headaches

Headaches due to a brain tumour are persistent, extending over several days or weeks and are typically accompanied by nausea and vomiting. Morning headaches and constant throbbing headaches can also be a symptom of brain tumours.

  • Seizures
Seizures are the most common brain tumour symptoms, appearing even before headaches. If you have a sudden, unexplainable episode, whether brief or bull-blown, please seek medical counsel immediately.
  • Vision Problems

In case of tumours in areas of brain that control vision, vision problems may arise as early symptoms. This can range from blurred or double vision to loss of peripheral vision.

  • Changes in Mood or Mental Status

Sudden and unexplainable mood swings or difficulty concentrating.

  • Personality or Behavioural Changes

This includes extreme changes in behaviour or personality. For instance, a generally happy-go-lucky person becomes extremely morose or a talkative person becomes unnaturally quiet.

  • Clumsy Movements

Loss of balance and clumsy bodily movements can signal the presence of a brain tumour.

  • Limb Weakness

Weakness in an arm or leg, or numbness in any part of the body can also be a symptom.

When to Reach Out for Help

As a general rule of thumb, if you notice any one or more of these symptoms, please visit your doctor as soon as possible. The presence of these symptoms does not essentially mean you have a brain tumour, but they should still be immediately examined by a medical professional.

Even if your symptoms are mild or intermittent, you should not let them go unchecked. Remember, when it comes to your health, it is always better to be cautious and get any doubts cleared.
