Recognising the Early Symptoms of Urological Cancers: When to See a Doctor

Staying in control of your health is all about noticing any changes in your body, big or small. Often, these changes may turn out to be nothing, but it is always wise to be proactive and get things checked out by your doctor.

This is especially true when it comes to serious conditions like cancer, where recognizing potential red flags early and knowing when to seek medical advice can make a world of difference. Through this blog, we will be exploring the most common symptoms of urological cancer and why seeking medical counsel at the right time is crucial.

What Are Urological Cancers?

Urological cancers are those cancers that affect the urinary system, as well as the male reproductive system. The most common types are:

While a majority of these cancers affect men, some of them, like bladder and kidney cancer, also affect women. Each type of urological cancer can present a different set of symptoms, but they share some general warning signs that are explored in the upcoming section.

Early Symptoms to Look Out For

1. Blood in the Urine (Haematuria)
One of the most common early signs of urological cancers, bladder and kidney cancer in particular, is spotting blood in the urine. It can appear as a bright red or a darker, rusty colour. If you notice any blood in your urine, it’s important to have it checked by a doctor. It could be a sign of infection or another benign condition, but in rare cases, it may be an early sign of cancer.

2. Pain or Discomfort
Persistent pain in the lower back, sides, or abdomen could be a symptom of kidney or bladder cancer. In some cases, pain or a burning sensation when urinating may be an early sign of a urinary tract infection, but if it continues, consult with your doctor to rule out other causes.

3. Changes in Urination
Frequent urination, difficulty starting or stopping the flow, or feeling the need to urinate but not being able to pass much urine could be symptoms of urological cancers, particularly prostate cancer in men. These symptoms can also result from benign conditions like an enlarged prostate, but if you experience them consistently, seeking medical advice is important.

4. Unexplained Weight Loss or Fatigue
If you notice a sudden, unexplained drop in weight or continued fatigue that doesn’t improve with rest, it’s advisable to consult your doctor. While these symptoms could be due to other conditions, they are also sometimes associated with urological cancers.

When to See a Doctor

If you experience any of the symptoms mentioned above and they persist for more than a few days, or if they occur alongside other changes in your health, don’t hesitate to contact your doctor. Early detection is the best way to ensure that any underlying issues are addressed quickly and effectively.
