5 new year resolutions
you must put on your list

Being diagnosed with cancer may have you analysing your whole life and wondering which of the lifestyle choices may have paved the way for this to happen to you. While your go-to new year’s resolution may be to set unrealistic goals and fully transform your lifestyle, the challenges of fighting cancer don’t make it any easier to commit to a new years resolution. But does this mean that you shouldn’t have new year’s resolutions at all?

There is nothing wrong with trying to make a big change. But I have seen some patients be even more affected when the toll of the treatment gets to them and aren’t able to fulfil the promise they made to themselves. So, for this new year, I suggest keeping it simple. And ironically, simple strategies often have the most impact. Here are a few you can start with.

Try meditating every day, even if it is for 5 minutes: Meditation helps with many issues like anxiety, sleep problems, high blood pressure, etc. Don’t forget to trust the process because it might take a while for you to get the hang of it.

Take a walk or commit to doing some light exercise: If you are wondering what a walk can do, the enormous long-term benefits of it can shock you! Commit to walking every day for 15 minutes or if you are up for it, you can also try some light yoga or exercise after consulting your doctor.

Do something you have always wanted to do: Not every resolution has to be something to do with your medical condition. Doing something, even the simplest of things, that you never found the time to do before can make you feel connected to yourself.

Stay more connected with your loved ones: The support and love you receive from the people you hold close to yourself will help you overcome this challenge.

Switch one unhealthy food item with a healthy one: Following a strict nutritious diet is not the easiest to do when you also have to deal with the side effects of the treatment and medication. So, start easy. You can always add more to it later.

If you are unsure about making a big change, start with simple ones. Watch how sticking to the smallest resolution can help you stay motivated. At Apollo Proton Cancer Centre, our skilled team of oncologists not just offer the best treatment options for you but also help you get through the challenge. You can discuss with your doctor at Apollo Proton Cancer Centre any concerns you have and take their guidance in making decisions that are best for you.
