To hear from a loved one that they are diagnosed with cancer can be devastating. And one of the first thoughts to run through your mind is, “How do I best support him/her.”

Studies have shown that patients who receive strong emotional support tend to better adjust to the changes that cancer brings and help them stay strong throughout recovery. So, if you really want to help your loved one during their tough times, here are a few things you can do.

1. Talk to them: Emotional support in the form of conversations or even just listening to what they have to say is highly helpful. If you are scared of saying the wrong thing, what often helps is being honest. Communicate what your concerns are and you can even ask them what you can do to help. Let them tell you how to help.
2. Offer practical support: From driving them to doctor’s appointments to helping with laundry or making a couple of meals, ask them what the tasks are that you can take up. However, if they are not comfortable with you doing those tasks for them, respect that decision as well and ask how else you can help.
3. Treat them the same but be understanding: What I mean by this is that if you used to hang out with them a lot, don’t suddenly stop making plans because they are diagnosed with cancer. Make plans that are not too hectic. Also, be flexible and ready to accept last-minute cancellations or changes in plans.
